It may not be completely obvious to all you Fellow Fans out there that, after campfire tales and books, horror stories had a much more dramatic (and in my humble opinion, pretty damned exciting) venue through the old radio shows of the 1930s and 1940s. Shows like Inner Sanctum and Mystery Theater rocked the airwaves…episode after episode, listeners were entreated to a smorgasbord of different terrors, created vividly in your mind’s eye thanks to the diligent and carefully thought-out machinations of the performers, whether they be actors, musicians, or sound-effects technicians.
This lost art is showcased in the work of our good friends at Midnight Prestige with their innovative and downright fun Schlock Shock Radio, which you can listen to here (or at that link just to the right there…if you haven’t yet, you should); we’d also like to introduce you a place where you budding writers out there can have your own terror tales made into a radio drama!
Yara’s Haunt is a blog where you, the reader, can submit your short horror tales and have them done up in true, old-timey radio style! Sound effects, musical score, spooky narration, the works!
Derrick Penrod is a horror and radio fan from way back, and after honing his sound editing and production skills through radio work and polishing his dramatic talents, he decided to start putting words and effects into action and create his own “horror radio dramas”.
Influenced by the Reddit sub NoSleep and the Welcome To The Night Vale podcast, Derrick took his skills in audio production and his love of horror and combined them into a single entity. Titling his endeavor Yara’s Haunt, he welcomes reader submissions and creates old-school radio magic.
“My passion for this comes from the ability to bring these stories that these authors work so hard on to life,” Penrod says. “Knowing that I can enhance their stories in the way that they describe to further immerse the listener into their vision is what drives me.”
Give Derrick’s tales a listen by clicking here, or by checking out Schlock Shock Radio’s page here on the ‘Corpse, completing your old-time radio fix by listening in to Yara’s Haunt as well; there’s a link at the bottom of the page!
