Jennifer Hills is still tormented by the brutal sexual assault she endured years ago. She’s changed identities and cities, reluctantly joining a support group where she begins to piece together a new life. But when her new friend’s murderer goes free and the tales of serial rapists haunt her, Jennifer will hunt down the men responsible and do what the system won’t – make them pay for their crimes in the most horrific ways imaginable. Only this time, no jury may be able to save her. –Written by Noel Kardaris
There’s something about a revenge film that you can get behind. Watching someone tormented, abused, made helpless, and almost killed, in a film done right, makes you loathe the abusers and want to kill them yourself — which in turn is the fun in seeing the victim take revenge.
The two previous entries in this series did this well, and they were fun and emotional to watch. However, I Spit On Your Grave 3 fails at this miserably. Here, Jennifer’s assault and suffering was in her past. We only see quick glimpses in flashbacks and does not give us enough to get 100% behind her and root for her as the “anti-hero” we love about these films.
She goes after other people’s abusers, and we don’t actually see the actual abuse to get that deep down rage and hatred for these characters that make these types of films work. So here Jennifer just approaches some random character and tortures/kills them. There’s absolutely no emotional attachment for the audience. Unlike the other films, she IS the villain, I had no remorse or sympathy for her as victim.
There’s only two kills in the film, though graphic, they seemed forced and explicit for explicit sake, because that’s all this film had going for it. If you can’t get the audience emotionally involved, let’s slice a penis open…or sledge-hammer a big pipe in someone’s ass.
That’s pretty much how I felt after I watched this film — that the filmmakers took my $19.99 for the BluRay, then sledge-hammered a large pipe up my ass — at least it was lubed first.
