SEPTIC MAN 2013 Review

One of my personal favorite films so far this year has been SEPTIC MAN. It’s a horrific character driven film that I believe should not be missed. We had a chance to talk with Jason David Brown who not only plays Jack and Septic Man, but also was Production Designer.

LEGLESS CORPSE: How did you land the roll of Jack in SEPTIC MAN?

JASON DAVID BROWN: Well I’m friends with Jesse (Cook Director) and John (Geddes). I was going to have a roll in one of the three films they were making and Jack just ended up being the one.

LC: Jack is a very intense roll, emotionally, did you have to psych yourself up each day on the set, getting in that mind set?

JDB: No, as I have said before, you always want that process. You want to think about what he’s going to be like, but he kind of just became what he became. It was an intense shoot because I was Jack and production designer. I was building that set a lot of the time, or building alternate sets, or working on whatever needed to be worked on. Then I would slip into costume real quick and get into the tank and be Jack. Part of developing him is just my sketch book. I have a sketch book I always scribble in. In pre-production whatever we talked about or whatever came to my mind I just scribble it down. I just built from my sketch book and Jack just became what he became as a result of the insanity of the shoot.

LC: What do you think Jack’s next move would be after the ending of the movie?

JDB: The way that I would have it go, and this is like insane movie fantasy stuff, I would love to see him go out into a subterranean sort of dwelling that he could branch of into other subterranean dwellings from. He would meet other crazy mutant type people and he would go after people and hold them captive down there in like a flood line or something. There’s all kinds of things you could do. His wife’s pregnant, so maybe he has interest in the baby. You could have a story where he’s trying to re-enter his past life before all this happened. I don’t know, there’s all types of things you could do.
It could just be 90 minutes of the cops trying to chase him down (laughs). Septic Man’s on the loose thrashing the cops and trying to find his wife… who knows.

LC: You were truly amazing in the roll and I’m sure a lot of our readers want to know what you have lined up next that we can look for?

Septic Man Review

JDB: I wish I could say lots, but I have absolutely zero at the moment. We bought a new house awhile ago and it’s a fixer-upper in a big way. I’ve been renovating for a year straight. It’s something that keeps me up at night. I’ve been off way to long and I want to get back into it. What aspect of film that is? That’s a good question. I’d love to act more and do less production design because it’s just an immense amount of work. Acting is something that I never really went at full time. It’s always just been added-on to my production design duties. When I first started out in film I was purely writing and developing. I was doing a lot of story-boarding, concept designs, and developing stories. If the opportunity of something like that came along I would do that as well.

SEPTIC MAN IS NOW AVAILABLE ON ITUNES, VUDU, XBOX VIDEO, AND IN SELECT THEATERS NOW. ALSO AVAILABLE ON DVD AUGUST 19TH
