Hopscotch 2014

Hopscotch is a short film (little short of 30 minutes) by writer Christian Nelson and director Kirsten Walsh. I always enjoy a short genre film because, in most cases, they are truly wacky, disturbing, and make you think after it’s over.

Hopscotch is about a prostitute going to see a John, but instead of the John, she meets two other girls that have other plans for her.

Hopscotch was shot professionally, with a few shots that you normally won’t see in a short film. There is certainly some room for improvement in the sound department, but that’s the least of the problem with Hopscotch. Kirsten is certainly someone who should be behind a camera and I see big things in her future.

Knowing your way around a camera and having a beautifully shot film does not make a good film. The story by Christian Nelson is lacking. It’s a 25 minute film of three girls talking. It’s not that the film consisted of mostly dialogue, but if you’re going to have a dialogue driven film, make it interesting. Most of the dialogue was forced and boring to be honest. Also some elements of the story just didn’t fit. There is a part of the film where the character Jolene has to drink a beverage that she drugged for the prostitute, however she passes out for like a minute with no one even noticing and then just snaps out of it and is fine. This was out of place and not needed. At another point in the film the prostitute is handcuffed trying to do a magic trick and while she’s handcuffed the main bad girl is telling her she is in cahoots with a mob that runs a sex slavery operation, but the prostitute seems to have no concerns and continues to talk like it’s everyday business. Though I think a prostitute going to a strange house, having handcuffs on, and then being told about her hostess being in the sex slavery arena would raise the red flags, but it doesn’t, meh another day.

Bottom line this film was not intriguing, entertaining, or even coherent. I would love to see Kirsten direct something with a little more punch. I feel she is a huge talent in the filmmaking arena and I hope we get to see more of her work soon.
